Roger Nielsen began his career goals as a Fine Arts painting major at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1950’s to the early 60’s. Shortly after he left his studies, he returned to MN to open his first Gallery and Frame shop in the Minneapolis/Edina Morningside area.
In the mid-1970’s, he purchased a vacant six-story warehouse in the Lowertown area of St. Paul where he opened Master Framers Inc. on its first floor. The upper floors were renovated and rented as “live in studio lofts” for artists where they could create their art. The building, now named ‘262 Studios’, soon became one of the more recognized centers of creativity in the blossoming downtown arts district.
Over the years as the owner of Master Framers, Roger developed a national reputation as a leading expert in the custom framing field, an educator in picture frame design history, art and frame restoration, and design and frame development/ manufacturing. His clients over the years included high-end art dealers and collectors, major art museums, and Presidential libraries. Serving 7 years on the board of the National Professional Picture Framers Association, he was part of the recognized expert framing professionals who were instrumental in the development of the first set of professional standards for the picture framing industry.
In 2015, Roger sold his 262 Studios building, and his business. He now semi-retired, he and his wife live full-time at his home/art studio in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin. There he also handles private art restorations for his clients while again enjoying working on creating his own art.
While Roger admires Plein-Air artists, he prefers to work from photos in the comfort of his studio. Using multiple images of his subject, he develops his own composition and doesn’t need to rely on either the weather or atmospheric changes over the course of the day. Since he also likes to work on several paintings at a time, working indoors allows him that flexibility. Private Commissions are accepted.
